The Spencer-East Brookfield Food Pantry serves about 140-160 families per month—that’s 2,000-4,000lbs of food every week, 52 weeks a year.

This fantastic program is run by Kathy Sullivan. She has been running the Food Pantry for over 30 years, appointed by James Maroney. The program is run out of the Mary Queen of the Rosary Parish in Spencer, and has been run there as long as Kathy has been in charge.

This past Thanksgiving, the Food Pantry provided about 450 families with holiday food. She expects the turnout to be even higher for Christmas and the holiday season.

Kathy herself is in charge of shopping for the food bank. The program relies heavily on donations to cover the cost of goods. Big Y and Price Chopper are major donors to the food pantry. Personal donations come in all the time to help the program. Kathy says, “I am very lucky to have such a supportive community and I’ve never had to turn anyone away, and that speaks to the kind of community we live in.”

Donations from the community are main contributors to the program. Government funding, like USDA and MESAT, provide state food and money. Corporate food is also an option for the Pantry, costing $0.16/lb for a maintenance feed. Kathy believes the spending is worth it.

Although Kathy contributes heavily to running the Food Pantry, she’s not the only one. She states, “I work with a tremendous group of women. Our goal is not just to feed, but to make a difference as well.” The team does their best to accommodate allergies and special diets for the sake of their recipients. She humbly states, “I think (making accommodations) really sets us apart from other food banks. I feel really blessed to be able to do what I do.”

If you would to contribute, please contact the pantry by phone at (508) 885-3111.
